Released last week, this minibook by Cindy Sridharan aka @copyconstruct is 10,000% awesome. Cindy expounds at great length and depth on observability. It’s a lot like of some of the posts from her I’ve linked to before…except even better. Also, note: you don’t have to sign up for the marketing emails to get the ebook. It’s very much worth reading.
Digging into other stuff, I stumbled across this video from the folks at Google Cloud on SLIs, SLOs, and SLAs. It’s a great video on what they mean, their relationship to one another, and how to use them effectively. There’s also a bunch of other great videos on the channel as well.
The team at Intercom walks us through how their on-call has evolved over time, how/why they improved certain aspects, and what they’re doing now. I especially like the history section of this article, as it echoes what I often see with my own clients.
This is about a year old now, but totally new to me. It’s one of the best videos I’ve seen on Prometheus and how it works, as told by one of the co-creators of it.
If you’re in San Francisco on May 30th, Pinterest and Slack are both speaking at the MonitorSF meetup. Pinterest will be talking their in-house distributed tracing system, while Slack will be talking about their monitoring and observability platform. Sadly, no recording or livestream for these.
Monitorama PDX 2018 is only two weeks away, so the party/meetups announcements are stopping to come up. If you’re going to Monitorama, this afterparty organized by the Sensu folks is always a ton of fun. First 100 people to register get one of their new t-shirts too.
The folks at Honeycomb have opened registration for their upcoming day-long conference, o11ycon (it’s short for observability). What started as a half-joke at Monitorama last year became real and that’s pretty cool.
See you next week!
