Hey folks, welcome to another installment of Monitoring Weekly! Did you write something about monitoring recently? Maybe got an idea rolling around in your head? Send it on over and let the community learn from you. :D

Monitoring News, Articles, and Blog posts
Time Series Database Lectures #4 - Fintan Quill (Kdb+) & Time Series Database Lectures #5 - Edouard Alligand (QuasarDB)

Two more lectures from Carnegie Mellon’s series on time series databases, this time talking about QuasarDB and Kdb+–two more databases I hadn’t seen before these lectures.

Making Marketing Infrastructure Robust

What this article lacks in length it makes up for in impact: the author (very!) concisely shows how they applied monitoring principles learned from the SRE book toward improving their marketing infrastructure, first starting at defining Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and determining Service Level Objectives (SLOs) from there.

blacklane/kiev: A set of tools to do distributed logging for Ruby web applications

I’m a big fan of structured logging so it makes me happy when other people jump aboard and make it easy. This project aims to make structured logging super easy to implement in a number of Ruby-based frameworks (Rails, Sinatra, Rack, and more).

Monitoring Discourse Forums For Better Community Engagement

This article takes two things I absolutely love and combines them: community building and monitoring. Measuring engagement levels on forums is an interesting challenge (ask me how I know). Combine that with Discourse’s lack of a proper metrics API (again, ask me how I know) and you end up with hacks like this. A clever method of getting the data, nonetheless though.

See you next week!
